Long Enough

Sarah lay on the cellar ground. A thin blanket covered her. It was not the cold that made her shiver though. It was his touch. He always came for her after her mother was asleep. Always took her down to the cellar where any of her cries went unheard. Since the age of 8 he had violated her. Seven years...and counting. How she wished she could tell her mother. But he had threatened her so many times. So she had kept quiet. The tears silently fell. She staggered back to bed. Wishing she was free from this horrible man. In the morning ..her body bruised and sore..she got out of bed. Something felt different this morning. She suddenly realised she was 15. Not a scared 8 year old anymore. She put on the clothes she has worn the night before. Waited until she heard him leave for work. Then went downstairs to the kitchen where her mother was preparing her breakfast.

Sarahs mother looked at her in shock as the truth hit her in the face. A tear fell to the ground.Her legs gave way. Sarah helped her up and hugged her tight. "Lets go Mama" Sarah said " We have to go now. The evidence will put him in jail for a long time." They walked slowly into the police building. Sarah breathed a sigh of relief. "I have a surprise for you Mama" Sarah said. "Oh and what is that?" her mother smiled. "We will go for a walk and I'll show you" Sarah said. "This sounds interesting" her mother laughed and cleared away the dishes. "Ok lets go. I am curious." They walked arm in arm down the road. Chatting about her school and friends. They walked about 3 blocks then came to stand infront of a building. Her mother looked at her with a worried look on her face. 'Its ok" Sarah said. "Everything is going to be ok now Mama. Im all grown up and he cant scare me anymore. He said he would kill you if I told anyone. But I was only 8 then Mama. Now Im older and I dont want him to do this to me anymore"
